Divide by 9 Worksheet

The 9s have a pattern that works for division too, so students can find most answers by looking at the tens digit. This sheet has 30 problems for grades 3 and 4 and takes about 10 minutes.

  3. 27 ÷ 9 = 3
  4. 36 ÷ 9 = 4
  5. 45 ÷ 9 = 5
  6. 54 ÷ 9 = 6
  7. 63 ÷ 9 = 7
  8. 72 ÷ 9 = 8
  9. 81 ÷ 9 = 9
  10. 90 ÷ 9 = 10
  11. 99 ÷ 9 = 11
  12. 108 ÷ 9 = 12

Part B: Mixed up Divide.

  1. 27 ÷ 9 = 3
  2. 108 ÷ 9 = 12
  3. 36 ÷ 9 = 4
  4. 90 ÷ 9 = 10
  5. 0 ÷ 9 = 0

  7. 72 ÷ 9 = 8
  8. 18 ÷ 9 = 2
  9. 81 ÷ 9 = 9
  10. 63 ÷ 9 = 7
  11. 54 ÷ 9 = 6
  12. 45 ÷ 9 = 5

Part C: Missing number Write the number that makes each fact true.

  1. 63 ÷ 9 = 7
  2. 72 ÷ 9 = 8
  3. 99 ÷ 9 = 11
  4. 36 ÷ 9 = 4
  5. 27 ÷ 9 = 3
  6. 45 ÷ 9 = 5

Tips for teachers and parents

  • For dividends from 9 to 90, the answer is one more than the tens digit. 54 ÷ 9: the tens digit is 5, so the answer is 6.
  • Check the dividend first: its digits must add to 9. If they do not, the number is not in the 9 times table up to 9 × 10.
  • For 99 ÷ 9 and 108 ÷ 9, use the 9 times table directly: 9 × 11 = 99 and 9 × 12 = 108.
  • Connect to the finger trick from the 9 times table for students who learned it.

Common mistakes

  • Using the tens digit itself as the answer, so 63 ÷ 9 becomes 6. The answer is one more: 7.
  • Using the pattern on 99 and 108, where it does not work. Point out that it only holds up to 90 ÷ 9.

Frequently asked questions

What is the trick for dividing by 9?

For numbers from 9 to 90 in the 9 times table, add one to the tens digit. 72 ÷ 9: the tens digit is 7, so the answer is 8.

Why does the tens-digit trick work?

In the 9 times table up to 9 × 10, the tens digit of each answer is one less than the number multiplied by 9.
