2 Digit by 1 Digit Division with Remainders
These problems use dividends up to 99, so many answers go past the times tables and need a two-step method. The sheet has 24 problems for grade 4 and takes about 18 minutes.

Part A Divide. Write the quotient and the remainder.
- 26 ÷ 5 = 5 R 1
- 10 ÷ 9 = 1 R 1
- 99 ÷ 4 = 24 R 3
- 43 ÷ 4 = 10 R 3
- 38 ÷ 8 = 4 R 6
- 25 ÷ 2 = 12 R 1
- 65 ÷ 7 = 9 R 2
- 95 ÷ 6 = 15 R 5
- 96 ÷ 9 = 10 R 6
- 29 ÷ 7 = 4 R 1
- 3 ÷ 2 = 1 R 1
- 21 ÷ 6 = 3 R 3
Part B Divide. Check: quotient × divisor + remainder = dividend.
- 92 ÷ 7 = 13 R 1
- 75 ÷ 4 = 18 R 3
- 15 ÷ 8 = 1 R 7
- 95 ÷ 8 = 11 R 7
- 96 ÷ 5 = 19 R 1
- 60 ÷ 9 = 6 R 6
- 63 ÷ 2 = 31 R 1
- 16 ÷ 5 = 3 R 1
- 71 ÷ 7 = 10 R 1
- 63 ÷ 4 = 15 R 3
- 87 ÷ 6 = 14 R 3
- 73 ÷ 6 = 12 R 1
Tips for teachers and parents
- Split the dividend into tens and ones. For 87 ÷ 4, take 80 ÷ 4 = 20, then 7 ÷ 4 = 1 R 3, so the answer is 21 R 3.
- Use a known fact as a stepping stone. For 74 ÷ 6, start with 60 ÷ 6 = 10, then 14 ÷ 6 = 2 R 2, so 12 R 2.
- Estimate first: 87 ÷ 4 is a little more than 80 ÷ 4 = 20.
- Check with "quotient × divisor + remainder = dividend" on every problem. For 87 ÷ 4: 21 × 4 + 3 = 87.
Common mistakes
- Stopping at the times table limit, such as 87 ÷ 4 = 9 R 51. The remainder must be smaller than 4; keep dividing.
- Forgetting to add the two parts of the quotient after splitting. Write each part down before adding.
What to practice next
Students who are accurate here are ready for long division with 3-digit dividends.
Frequently asked questions
How do you divide a 2 digit number by a 1 digit number?
Split the dividend into a part you can divide easily, usually the tens, then divide what is left and add the quotients.
Why are some quotients larger than 12?
The dividends go up to 99, so a problem like 95 ÷ 3 has a quotient of 31. That is past the times tables, which is the point of the sheet.
Is the answer key included?
Yes, page 2 shows each quotient and remainder.
